>Might be barking up the wrong tree with such a design idea. The question for viability is really how much weight do we save from carrying less batteries vs gain with the additional weight of the generator. I’m inclined to say that it wouldn’t be enough to justify additional design work
As a ballpark for the kindof weight tradeoffs, you're looking at around 50g-100g for a small generator, and another 100g max for electronics (low rated 3 phase rectifier and a voltage regulator). Whats left is some kindof coupling system, probably friction or belt would be simplest and would come in under ~200g easily. I reckon we could do the whole thing in around 200g.
But lets take a bad case and say its 600g. That in battery life is 6 cells, so 5Ah @ 6s. So lets say we make that trade. Flight time between takeoff and search area is 30min.
To generate 5Ah across 30min would be a 10A load on the generator, which can be done with a tiny 30A motor and esc. That would cover all the battery power given up to maintain the same weight across the first leg of the flight. There's two legs.
